Where is New Zealand?

New Zealand (Aoteraroa in Maori) is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands. The country is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 miles) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and roughly 1,000 kilometres south of the Pacific island nations of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.
Geography
Located in the southern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is made up of two islands approximately 1,600 kilometres (995 miles) south east of Austrlia. Combined with serveral smaller islands the total land area is about 270,534 sq. kms (104,454 sq. miles).
New Zealnd's geography includes spectaculat landscapes incorporating the vast mountain chain of the Southern Alps (larger than the Frnech, Austrian, and Swiss Alps combined), the volcano region of the North Island, fiords, glaciers, lakes, rainforests, and extensive grassy plains.
Climate
With opposite seasons to the Northern Hemisphere, January and February are our warmest months and July the coldest. Temperatures average 8 degrees celius in July and 22 degrees celcius in January. Summer temperatures can however reach the low 30s.
Population
With a population of 4.2 million, New Zealand is one of the world's least crowded countries. It is a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvination and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers and adventurers.
